This is an actual Bell UH-1 Iroquois mounted on a 12-foot pedestal in Soddy-Daisy Veterans Park.
Bell Industries designed this helicopter in 1952 for the U.S. Army to meet the need for medical evacuation and utility duties. It first flew in 1956 and ordered into production in 1960. Since then over 16,000 have been built, with 7,000 seeing duty in the Vietnam War.
It was originally designated HU-1 (Helicopter Utility), giving it it's nickname "Huey." Later, it was changed to UH-1 but the nickname remained.
In the year 2000, Chapter 203 of the Vietnam Veterans of America took possession of this one in Ft Rucker, Alabama, and in 2001, the Huey was dedicated to "All Who Served."
