The WWI doughboy statue's original dedicated location was in front of a bank building in the center of town. At some point, perhaps while relocating it, the bayonet and rifle sling were lost. Longtime Vernal resident Alice White said, "I was pretty much responsible for saving the Doughboy. Back many years ago, the statue was moved and moved and finally forgotten. It was vandalized to the point that his rifle and arm were torn off. After three years of sitting broken in Milton Hatch’s garage, Milt asked me if I wanted to salvage the thing. I got the welding class at the Vernal Junior High School to fix it and we donated it back to the county."
Also in the area: Ouray's Fantasy Canyon. Maybe not the best choice for a road bike, especially when wet, but it could be great fun for a dual-sport!
