Located in the town suffering the highest per capita D-Day losses in the nation, the National D-Day Memorial pays tribute to the Allied Forces participating in the largest land, sea, and air operation in history: the invasion of Normandy, June 6, 1944. The National D-Day Memorial features a lush English Garden, a haunting invasion scene with statuary and a stylized landing craft, and the striking Victory Arch, serving as a powerful permanent tribute to the valor, fidelity, and sacrifice of D-Day service men and women.
Bedford, with a population of only 3200, was one of 11 Virginia communities who provided a company of soldiers to the 29th Infantry Division in the National Guard. 30 of Bedford’s soldiers landed on Omaha Beach and by the end of the day 19 were dead.
Hours: Tuesday-Sunday 10am-5pm. Admission fees apply, $10 with tour or $7 without a tour. Photo outside entrance is permitted, but it is advised to pay a visit to this impressive memorial.
Also in the area: The Blueridge Parkway entrance is just a few miles up the road and can be used to access from I-64 north of Bedford. If coming west from eastern Virginia, try RT 60 out of SW Richmond to RT 24 and into RT 460. VERY nice riding!
Note: Speed laws are strictly enforced, and Virginia is one state prohibiting radar detectors.
Tour of Honor-Virginia is sponsored by Tim Huls for GWRRA Virginia Region N Chapter L. |
