The memorial is built on the site of the first non-native settlement in Washington, a Spanish trade fort built in 1792 called Ft Nunez Gaona. The memorial is a joint venture between the government of Spain and the Makah Indian Tribe. It was built to honor Spain’s contribution to the area, and to honor the approximately 300 Makah tribal members who have served the nation as members of the Armed Forces.
